The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal to handle petitions arising from last Saturday’s Edo election has been constituted by the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem.
In a statement made available to reporters on Monday, in Abuja, the tribunal’s Secretary, Sunday Martins, Esq., said the panel will be inaugurated very soon.
According to Martins, the tribunal has been mandated to hear and determine petitions that may arise from the election. Speaking further, Martins noted that the Secretariat is now open to receive petitions from aggrieved parties and candidates.
He said the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Esther Amenaghawon Edigin has graciously approved the use of High Court Complex (Election Petition Court Hall), Sapele Road, Benin City for the Tribunal Exercise.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Sunday declared Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State as the winner of the election after defeating the All Progressives Congress candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu and others in the election.
President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling APC had congratulated Obaseki on his victory, but the APC in Edo is warming up for court having rejected the election outcome.
