Cases in SA increase by 2 128, deaths rise by 67

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, on Thursday 17 September, announced that the confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa have risen to 655 572. This is an increase of 2 128, as the total number of confirmed cases stood at 653 444 on Wednesday 16 September. 

Mkhize announced an updated death toll of 15 772. This is an increase of 67 as it stood at 15 705 on Wednesday 16 September. 

A total of 3 983 533 tests have been conducted to date with 22 354 new tests reported. There have been 585 303 recoveries thus far, translating to a recovery rate of 89.3%. 

LATEST COVID-19 CASES BY PROVINCE AS OF THURSDAY 17 SEPTEMBER

The following confirmed COVID-19 cases have been detected in each province as of Thursday: 

  • Eastern Cape – 87 776 cases
  • Free State – 43 041 cases; 
  • Gauteng – 216 341 cases; 
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 117 147 cases; 
  • Limpopo – 14 444 cases; 
  • Mpumalanga – 26 104 cases; 
  • North West – 27 721 cases; 
  • Northern Cape – 14 003 cases; and 
  • Western Cape – 108 995 cases
  • Unknown – 0 cases.

This comes to a total of 655 572 confirmed cases. 

COVID-19 DEATH TOLL BY PROVINCE AS OF THURSDAY

The following confirmed COVID-19-related deaths have been detected in each province as of Thursday: 

  • Eastern Cape – 3 058 deaths;
  • Free State – 838 deaths;
  • Gauteng – 3 960 deaths;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 2 469 deaths;
  • Limpopo – 344 deaths;
  • Mpumalanga – 496 deaths;
  • North West – 325 deaths; 
  • Northern Cape – 182 deaths;
  • Western Cape – 4 100 deaths. 

LATEST RECOVERIES BY PROVINCE 

Mkhize announced the latest COVID-19 recoveries as follows: 

  • Eastern Cape – 83 629 recoveries;
  • Free State – 28 759 recoveries;
  • Gauteng – 192 081 recoveries;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 107 732 recoveries;
  • Limpopo – 13 511 recoveries;
  • Mpumalanga – 24 675 recoveries;
  • North West – 22 948 recoveries;
  • Northern Cape – 10 516 recoveries; and
  • Western Cape – 101 452 recoveries.

COVID-19 ACTIVE CASES 

  • Eastern Cape – 1 089 active cases;
  • Free State – 13 444 active cases;
  • Gauteng – 20 300 active cases;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 6 946 active cases;
  • Limpopo – 589 active cases;
  • Mpumalanga – 933 active cases;
  • North West – 4 448 active cases;
  • Northern Cape – 3 305 active cases; and
  • Western Cape – 3 443 active cases.
