Cases in SA increase by 725, deaths rise by 39

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, on Monday 21 September, announced that the confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa have risen to 661 936. This is an increase of 725, as the total number of confirmed cases stood at 661 211 on Sunday 20 September. 

Mkhize announced an updated death toll of 15 992. This is an increase of 39 as it stood at 15 953 on Sunday 20 September. 

A total of 4 047 723 tests have been conducted to date with 6 180 new tests reported. There have been 591 208 recoveries thus far, translating to a recovery rate of 89.3%. 

LATEST COVID-19 CASES BY PROVINCE AS OF MONDAY 21 SEPTEMBER

The following confirmed COVID-19 cases have been detected in each province as of Monday: 

  • Eastern Cape – 88 205 cases
  • Free State – 44 291 cases; 
  • Gauteng – 217 485 cases; 
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 117 833 cases; 
  • Limpopo – 14 721 cases; 
  • Mpumalanga – 26 525 cases; 
  • North West – 28 187 cases; 
  • Northern Cape – 15 163 cases; and 
  • Western Cape – 109 526 cases
  • Unknown – 0 cases.

This comes to a total of 661 936 confirmed cases. 

COVID-19 DEATH TOLL BY PROVINCE AS OF MONDAY

The following confirmed COVID-19-related deaths have been detected in each province as of Monday: 

  • Eastern Cape – 3 079 deaths;
  • Free State – 838 deaths;
  • Gauteng – 4 039 deaths;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 2 532 deaths;
  • Limpopo – 362 deaths;
  • Mpumalanga – 496 deaths;
  • North West – 341 deaths; 
  • Northern Cape – 184 deaths;
  • Western Cape – 4 121 deaths. 

LATEST RECOVERIES BY PROVINCE 

Mkhize announced the latest COVID-19 recoveries as follows: 

  • Eastern Cape – 84 108 recoveries;
  • Free State – 29 093 recoveries;
  • Gauteng – 193 429 recoveries;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 108 063 recoveries;
  • Limpopo – 13 756 recoveries;
  • Mpumalanga – 25 156 recoveries;
  • North West – 24 101 recoveries;
  • Northern Cape – 11 541 recoveries; and
  • Western Cape – 101 961 recoveries.

COVID-19 ACTIVE CASES 

  • Eastern Cape – 1 018 active cases;
  • Free State – 14 360 active cases;
  • Gauteng – 200 17 active cases;
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 7 238 active cases;
  • Limpopo – 603 active cases;
  • Mpumalanga – 873 active cases;
  • North West – 3 745 active cases;
  • Northern Cape – 3 438 active cases; and
  • Western Cape – 3 444 active cases.

MKHIZE WARNS OF RESURGENCE 

Following a move to Level 1 lockdown, Mkhize warned South Africans not to get too comfortable. The health minister insisted that a transition into a further opening of the economy must be done with caution. 

“South Africans must know that Level 1 isn’t like everything is over. Yes, it’s in place to rebuild our economy, but we have to make sure we take precautions. This COVID-19 can still resurge. We must not lose the message and be complacent. The fight continues, so our containment measures still remain in place,” he said.
