Daily masses to resume in Cairo, Alexandria churches with limited attendance: Pope Tawadros II – Politics – Egypt

Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox Church will announce on Tuesday the details regarding the resumption of daily mass prayers in Cairo and Alexandria churches, albeit with an attendance rate that does not exceed the 25 percent cap, according to the head of the Church Pope Tawadros II.

Pope Tawadros II said on Monday that the Church will issue an official statement regarding the return of mass prayers on Tuesday, and that all anti-coronavirus safety measures will be implemented.

He added that one person will be allowed at each pew in churches.

“We have not announced the return of [other] gatherings yet,” the pope stressed.

Daily masses and other congregational services in Cairo and Alexandria churches have been suspended or limited to low attendance since 7 December due to the then-rising rate of coronavirus infections detected among clergymen and churchgoers.

Churches are only allowed to hold weekly masses in the presence of a maximum of five deacons only. Other services have been allowed under restrictive measures.

The second wave of the pandemic has started to batter Egypt since last month, causing higher daily infection and death rates compared to the preceding five months, which were noticeably marked with lower rates.

However, the daily infection toll registered by the health ministry has been on the decline since 9 January.
