The new trusted process with the Philadelphia 76ers will be run by Daryl Morey.
The longtime general manager of the Houston Rockets is in “advanced talks” to oversee the Sixers’ basketball operations, and a deal could be finalized within “the next few days,” according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Morey announced last week that he was stepping down from the Rockets’ front office after 13 seasons to spend more time with his family, but also “to see what other potential challenges could be out there.”
Wojnarowski also tweeted that current Sixers GM Elton Brand is “expected to remain in his current position,” according to sources.
Earlier this month, the Clippers hired Doc Rivers as head coach to replace Brett Brown, who was fired in August after the Sixers were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Boston Celtics. The new leadership will inherit a core built around Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.
In October of last year, Morey sparked issues between the NBA and China officials after he tweeted support for anti-government and pro-democracy protestors in Hong Kong, along with an image with the caption: “Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong.”
The famed tanking process in Philadelphia began with Morey’s lieutenant in Houston, Sam Hinkie, being hired as the 76ers GM. Now, Morey will look to finish what Hinkie, who was fired in 2016, started.
