  • A high-ranking police officer was arrested during a pre-dawn raid at her house in Johannesburg on Monday morning.
  • Her arrest relates to the supply of emergency warning equipment for the South African Police Service in 2017.
  • A number of other police officials have already been arrested, including former acting national police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane.

A high-ranking police officer was arrested during a pre-dawn raid at her house in Johannesburg on Monday morning.

According to Investigating Directorate (ID) spokesperson Sindisiwe Twala, she is the 13th accused expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on charges of corruption, fraud, theft and money laundering.

“Her arrest and appearance relate to the supply of emergency warning equipment for the South African Police Service [SAPS] in 2017. The contract price and exposure to the police fiscus was R191 million. However, R65 million was paid to the service provider. The payment of R22 million was stopped at the advanced stage of the ID’s investigation into the matter,” Twala said.

A number of other police officials have already been arrested, including former acting national police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane, former Gauteng police commissioner Deliwe de Lange, Gauteng deputy police commissioner Nombhuruza Lettie Napo, retired divisional commissioner Lieutenant General Ramahlapi Johannes Mokwena, Brigadier James Ramanjalum, Major General Ravichandran Pillay, Colonel Thomas Dumas Marima and Sergeant Maetapese Joseph Mulaiwa.

The civilians are Judy Rose, Samantha Andrews, and millionaire Vimpie Manthatha, owner of Instrumentation for Traffic Law Enforcement (Pty) Ltd.

Manthatha’s company was awarded a contract to supply and install blue lights, sirens and radios in SAPS vehicles. Manthatha allegedly supplied fraudulent tax clearance certificates to the SAPS in tender documents.
