Manchester United kept their place at the top of the Premier League table with a goalless draw at defending champions Liverpool, as goalkeeper Alisson’s heroics denied them a victory at Anfield.

Liverpool enjoyed much of the first-half possession and created several chances, including Andy Robertson’s half-volley over the crossbar and Roberto Firmino’s tame effort into the hands of David De Gea.

Man Utd came close to breaking the deadlock with their only shot of the opening period, Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick flying inches wide of Alisson’s goal.

After the break, Harry Maguire denied Roberto Firmino a tap-in before Mohamed Salah fired wide for the hosts.

Alisson then kept out Fernandes with a fine reaction save before superbly keeping out Paul Pogba’s close-range strike late on, either side of Thiago forcing De Gea to palm his long-range shot wide.

A 12th match unbeaten takes Man Utd to 37 points, two more than second-placed Leicester City.

Liverpool are three points behind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team in third.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said of the match:
“There was a lot of good stuff but what we missed was a goal. If we win the game 1-0, it’s fine; the boys played a really good game today against a good organised side. In the first half we did really well, we passed it well and kept them under pressure. We didn’t score and that’s the biggest thing in football. In these situations in football, you have to keep going and try to ignore the talk around”

Premier League pundit Paul Scholes, said:
“United have to be the happier. They weren’t great but they had the two best chances of the game. On another day you’d be critical of the performance but given the league position, it’s a great result for them. It’s a really good point for them; they had the two best chances of the game and limited Liverpool to virtually nothing.”

Man Utd manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said:
“We didn’t play well enough; we didn’t impose ourselves on the game, especially in the first half. We grew into the game, created two massive chances and two great saves from the season. We can play better, we can be more composed and we can pass the ball better – there’s a couple of things that we can improve on. I’m a bit disappointed at the moment”
