Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State has unveiled several revenue-generating strategies including establishing agro-allied industries, granting tax incentives to potential investors and establishing several other revenue-generating structures and increasing the tempo of activities of government
Masari, who made the above disclosure during a chat with The Nation at Government House Katsina, said his administration is now fully targeting revenue-generating strides especially with the setting up of a committee to drive the new policy measures and partnering with private films to boost the state’s IGR
He said “You see what happened in Katsina like most parts of the Northern states, is that we have no structure for internal revenue generation, if Internally generated revenue and resources go up, it means the tempo of activities of government will go up so that there will be more revenue if on the reverse it means the activities of government will go down.
“We realized also that this problem started 40years ago with the abolition of taxation which hitherto made the people think that paying tax is a way of oppressing the people, else it is a blessing. If the citizen become more responsible and pay all the necessary taxes and become more aware of what the government spent their revenue on, they will key into government policies and programs’’
“From the period of 1960 to the end of the Nigerian civil war, the country had totally depended on revenue from agriculture, livestock, and other forms of resources either directly or indirectly. later, Agriculture was put aside, and again with the abolition of coal tax, Katsina state is making progress but in terms of IGR it has nothing commensurate to what we see on the streets.”
Masari further lamented that people who pay taxes are mostly the civil servants and those who want to do tax clearance to contest elections or seek contracts from governments, thereby leaving out a huge population gap of those who do not pay their taxes to the government
He assured that the state government shall make plots of land available and also provide power from KEDCO for regular power supply from hybrid and solar to potential industrial ventures in the state
He said ’’We recently inaugurated land for solid minerals and ministry for resource development and directed Companies representing government to participate in the exploration of mining with partnership companies.
“We also contacted the ministry of commerce to advertise for the employment of a chairman to spearhead our revenue generation drive.”
