Rare Blue Moon will spookily rise on Halloween 2020 — here’s what it means

What are the odds?

A Blue Moon — by definition a rarity — will rise this month, notably on Halloween. Take note, werewolves.

The lunar event means simply that a second full moon will rise in the same month. The first one, a Harvest Moon, lit up the sky on October 1. It also happens to be a Blood Moon, meaning a full moon that happens in October, in the midst of spooky season.

It won’t actually be blue unless there are dust and smoke particles of a certain size, which can scatter red light and make the moon take on a blueish hue, according to EarthSky.org.

This year’s Halloween full moon will rise at 10:49 a.m. that day — which guarantees visibility across all times zones on the 31st. The next Blue Moon in a calendar month will hit skies on Aug. 30, 2023.

Full Moons on Halloween are even rarer. They only happen every 18 or 19 years, the Old Farmer’s Almanac reports. Technically, the second full moon of the month is called a “Hunter’s Blue Moon,” so here we have a full-blown Hunter’s Blue Moon on Halloween, the almanac writes.

In Celtic traditions, Halloween was the day spirits of the dead wandered around in the moonlight — so consider this holiday the creepiest in a while.

Nevertheless, it’s a good month to catch a glimpse of the moon twice, after NASA scientists announced the discovery of more water on its surface than previously thought. The breakthrough confirms that the moon could be a “resource” to us earthlings, the scientists said Monday.

That should give us all something to howl about.
