By Moses Emorinken, Abuja

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has explained why it cannot state that positive cases of COVID-19 are declining.

It stated revealed low cases reported in the past weeks cannot be interpreted to mean decline in infection rate because nine states are performing below expectations on testing and sample collection.

The States are: Taraba, Adamawa, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa and Yobe.

The NCDC however stated only three states – Lagos, FCT, and Abuja- can confidently report decline because they have tested the highest number of samples so far.

It however said it still cannot make any interpretation of the national data because of the nine states.

The Director-General of NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, made these known during the briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja.

He said: “Yes we report figures on a national basis but in reality, the drivers of this epidemic are different across the country. So we have to really have a sub-national understanding of what is going on.”
